Sales Tax Calculator (Forward & Reverse VAT)
Calculate state and local sales tax, final checkout totals, or reverse-calculate pre-tax net prices from tax-inclusive gross amounts. Essential for consumer budgeting, business invoice auditing, and e-commerce compliance.
Understanding Sales Tax: Forward, Reverse & Nexus Laws
Unlike national Value-Added Tax (VAT) systems used across Europe and the UK, or Goods & Services Tax (GST) used in India and Canada, the United States has no federal sales tax. Instead, sales tax is levied independently by 45 state governments and more than 10,000 individual municipalities, counties, and transit authorities.
1. Forward Sales Tax (Add Tax) Formula
When purchasing goods or services where the tax is added at the register:
Total Gross = Net Price + Tax Amount
2. Reverse Sales Tax (Extract Tax from Total) Formula
If you have an all-inclusive receipt total and need to deduce the pre-tax base for accounting or deductible expense filing:
Tax Paid = Gross Total - Net Pre-Tax Price
Example: If an item costs $108.25 inclusive of an 8.25% sales tax, the net pre-tax price is $108.25 / 1.0825 = $100.00, and the tax paid is $8.25.
Economic Nexus & Online E-Commerce Compliance
Following the landmark 2018 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in South Dakota v. Wayfair, Inc., states can mandate that out-of-state online retailers collect sales tax based on economic nexus. In most states, exceeding either $100,000 in gross annual sales or 200 separate transactions to buyers in that state triggers a mandatory sales tax registration and collection obligation.
